As Mayor of Thetford, it gives me immense pride to reflect on this year’s Festival of Thetford & Punjab, held on Sunday, 13th July. What began as a cultural celebration has grown into something deeply meaningful, not just for our town, but for communities far beyond our borders. This year’s festival was not only a joyful occasion but also a pilgrimage of heritage and remembrance for many in the global Sikh community, who came to honour the life and legacy of Maharaja Duleep Singh.
Thetford holds a special place in this shared history. It was here, just outside our town in Elveden, that Maharaja Duleep Singh lived out his later years. His story, of displacement, identity, resilience, and connection, resonates deeply. Through this festival, we continue to honour his memory while building bridges between cultures and generations.
I was especially moved by the energy and spirit of the Thetford Mela at Thetford Grammar School. The music, the colour, the performances, it was a beautiful reminder of how vibrant and inclusive our community has become. From the Heritage Brass Band of Rajasthan to the G.I.D.H.A dancers, from local school performers to renowned international artists, the event captured the very best of what festivals should be, a celebration of unity in diversity.
I would also like to commend the Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life for opening its doors freely to visitors all weekend. The new displays, especially those commemorating the centenary of the museum and showcasing the lives of the Duleep Singh family, added great historical depth to the weekend.
To all who attended, performed, volunteered, and travelled to be part of this event, thank you. Your presence makes this festival more than an event, it makes it a tradition. A gathering rooted in memory, enriched by culture, and alive with community.
Thetford is proud to host the Festival of Thetford & Punjab, and we look forward to welcoming you all again next year.
