A Spectacular Start to the Day at RAF Mildenhall

There’s something exhilarating about the roar of fighter jets cutting through the morning sky, and today was no exception. My day began at RAF Mildenhall, watching the first flights of the day the mighty F-15s and F-35s piercing the clouds. The energy, the sheer power it was a moment to remember.

As if that wasn't thrilling enough, we were invited to walk through the hangar, where the KC-135 air tankers, Ospreys, and the legendary MC-130J awaited us. Getting a closer look at the aircraft designed for special operations, infiltration, and extraction was nothing short of fascinating. And let’s just say, my husband usually the most diplomatic of people couldn’t wipe that wide-eyed grin off his face. It’s true what they say: boys and their big toys! Even I found myself in awe of the technology and precision behind these machines.

But today wasn’t just about aviation it was also a celebration of 43 years of the Joan Mann Special Sports Day. This incredible event, attended by her daughter and more popular than ever, welcomed over 300 athletes from around the region. With all the local RAF’s top brass and the mayoral representatives from East Anglia present, the athletes were honored for their extraordinary performances. While medals were awarded across multiple categories, for me, they were all champions.

A day filled with aviation, sportsmanship, and incredible energy what could be a better send-off before heading to France? RAF Mildenhall, you’ve outdone yourself.
